OSI: Equals

I’m participating once more in the poetry fest they’re hosting over at One Single Impression. This week’s prompt is “Equals,” ostensibly in recognition of the Vernal Equinox but meaning something a little more personal to me. If you enjoy poetry (and I know that you do), get on over to their site and check it out.

EQUALS

I’ve never liked it,
This “new math” they’re using now.
I’m strictly old school.

So you’ll forgive me
If I can’t get behind the
following theorem:

Let “M” be marriage
Let “X” be she, and “Y,” he
And let “L” be love

For all known values,
Let “C” be commitment, with
“T” serving as time.

If one supposes
M=L+ C(t)
M’s a real number

(Provided L is
the sum of X and Y, and
They can multiply).

No, I disagree
Heartily. Because, you see
It was taught to me

L is forever
Irrational,  and cannot
Be limited to

The sum X +Y
As deep C approaches M
There is no limit.

And when L is shown
To be infinite for all
Sums of X and Y.

Then perhaps “new math”
Will make a little more sense
And “W” (we)

Will be equals.

Claire, I think this is brilliant.

  2. @Sra Thank you, my friend. 🙂

  3. I think the formula still holds true, if you assume the X and Y are variables.

  4. I’ve waited to comment on this because I wasn’t sure what to say, and frankly I’m still not sure. “freaking awesome,” “perfect,” “beyond words.” These all come to mind but don’t quite get across what I think.

The poem is incredibly smart, and I hope someone, somewhere gets it like I do, but can maybe explain their thoughts a little better than me.

  5. @Heather Hey, thanks for commenting, sister. I appreciate the kind words and I definitely hope that as many people as possible can get it too.

For me, poetry’s always been much like sculpture. Both are things I enjoy, and I work as hard as I can to reveal the shape hiding in the stone (or words) without making a mess of things or leaving them so abstract that any enjoyment is lost for the viewer.

Let me know what YOU think.
